Frequently Asked Questions

The ideal time to visit Costa Brava depends on the type of holiday you’re looking for. If your goal is a classic beach vacation with swimming in the sea, the best period to choose is from June to September. This is when the weather is at its warmest and most stable, and the coastal waters reach comfortable temperatures. It’s worth noting that July and August are the peak of the season: beaches and restaurants are especially crowded, and prices reach their highest point.

For those planning to do more walking, sightseeing, or activities like hiking the Camí de Ronda trail or cycling, late spring (May, June) and early autumn (September, October) are perfect. During this time, the air temperature (+20…+25°C / 68-77°F) is most comfortable for long walks, and there are fewer tourists. This is also an excellent option for those who want to save money and avoid the crowds.

Costa Brava is the perfect destination for a family holiday, combining beaches, nature, and entertainment. The main pleasure is exploring the cozy coves (calas) with gentle slopes and clear water, such as Cala Sa Boadella in Lloret de Mar or the spacious Platja d’Aro beach. Boat trips with a glass-bottom boat or walks along the coast on the Camí de Ronda trail, as well as a visit to the Water World water park, are equally exciting. Active families can rent kayaks to reach hidden caves.

Be sure to add a bit of culture in a format that’s interesting for children. The surreal Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres is like a large labyrinth with amusing exhibits. A walk through the cobbled streets of the medieval villages of Pals or Peratallada feels like a journey back in time, and the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Empúries by the sea allow you to combine history with a swim. For a change of pace, you can head to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà nature park for bird watching or to Marineland to see a dolphin show.

Platja d’Aro is famous for its main beach (Platja Gran) – a long (about 2.2 km) and wide stretch of fine golden sand with a very gentle slope into the water. This makes it an ideal and safe place for a holiday with young children. The beach is well-equipped: it offers sunbed and umbrella rentals, showers, toilets, first-aid points, and numerous bars and restaurants right on the promenade. Children’s playgrounds are installed all along the beach. It is very busy during the high season, but due to its size, it doesn’t feel crowded.

If you’re looking for more secluded and picturesque spots, there are several small coves (calas) in the surrounding area. For example, Cala del Pi, located north of the town and surrounded by pines and cliffs, offers a more tranquil atmosphere and crystal-clear water, but it is smaller and can fill up quickly.

Overall, the beaches of Platja d’Aro are a choice in favor of comfort, convenience, and a full range of services for a relaxed family holiday.
